DR. ROMAN SMAL-STOCKI HEADS TARAS SHEVCHENKO MEMORIAL COMMITTEE

ALL UKRAINIAN ORGANIZATIONS CALLED TO PARTICIPATE


NEW YORK. - A special committee to plan and execute memorial celebrations during the centennial of Taras Shevchenko's death in 1961 and the 150th anniversary since his birth in 1964 was organized Friday, September 16 in the conference room of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America national office. The meeting, called by the UCCA elected Prof. Roman Smal-Stocki, President of the Shevchenko Scientific Society of U.S.A. as the chairman of the group which was given a provisional name of Shevchenko Memorial Committee.

Dmytro Halychyn, President of the UCCA chaired the meeting. He informed those present of the previous decisions of the UCCA Executive Board, and of the various proposals regarding the selection and duties of the committee to consolidate the centennial celebrations of the greatest Ukrainian poet, and the erection of his statue in Washington, D.C. Vasyl Mudry, UCCA staff administrator read the official resolution concerning this matter, which calls, among other things, for the incorporation of a special committee to erect the monument.

After discussion, Anthony Dragan, Editor-in-Chief of Svoboda moved that the following proposal of the plan for the memorial committee be adopted: Shevchenko Memorial Committee is composed of the heads of all Ukrainian-American national organizations which will be named alphabetically, without consideration as to their size, resources or stature. In case the president of a given organization is unable to participate in the Committee personally, he is to suggest an alternative representative. The Committee will be headed by the Executive Board comprising the president, two vice-presidents, executive director, secretary, treasurer, and directors in charge of specific projects.

Besides Dr. Smal-Stocki, the following people were elected to the Executive Board:

First Vice President, Prof. George Shevelov, President of Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in America.

Second Vice President, Prof. Lev E. Dobriansky, Chairman of the UCCA.

Executive Director, Dmytro Halychyn, President of the Ukrainian National Association.

Secretary, Jaroslaw Padoch, Supreme Secretary of the UNA and member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society.

Treasurer, Platon Stasiuk, dean of Ukrainian businessmen.

Directors: artistic - Sviatoslav Hordynsky; construction - Prof. Oleksa Povstenko; financial - Ihnat Bilynsky; publicity - Vasyl Mudry; external relations - Joseph Lesawyer; internal relations - Prof. Vasyl Steciuk; special events - Prof. Zynoviy Lysko.

To the Auditing Board the following representatives of Ukrainian institutions were elected: Roman Slobodian (U.N.A.), Edward Popil (Ukrainian Workingmen's Association),T. Kulchytsky (Providence), M. Dutkevych (Ukrainian National Aid), Mrs. Helen Lototsky (Ukrainian National Women's League), Julian Revay (Self-Reliance), Volodymyr Kalyna (NTSh), Dr. Roman Osinchuk (Professionals), Ivan Porytko (Veterans).

Until the actual incorporation, all the work of the Committee will be coordinated by Mr. Vasyl Mudry, of the UCCA national office.
