Spectacular Show of Ukrainian Art Opens in Detroit


DETROIT, Mich., Sept. 24. - A unique, week-long show of Ukrainian art opens today in Detroit. Works of sixty-seven Ukrainian artists from around the world, plus several musical concerts featuring well-known soloists and group of performers will be staged at the Community Art Center of Wayne State University.

Mary V. Beck, President of Detroit's Common Council is the chairman of the Ukrainian Arts Exhibit, and she will formally open it today to the public at 2:30 P.M. The exhibit will remain open daily from 2 P.M. to 10 P.M., and no admission will be charged. Today, too, a "Meet the Artists" dinner is planned for 5 P.M. at the auditorium of St. John Ukrainian Catholic Church in Detroit, according to the release from the sponsoring committee.

The concerts during the Art Exhibit will be held in the Community Art Center Auditorium in the following order:

At 8 P.M. today, Choir Trembita and Ira Bala, recent Grinnell Musical Scholarship winner will be on the program.

At 3 P.M. Sunday, Sept. 25, Roma Prima, ballerina and the Ukrainian Girl Bandurists.

At 8 P.M. Saturday, October 1, Choir Trembita, pianist Roman Rudnytsky, and soloist Oksana Soviak.

At 8 P.M. Sunday, October 2, the closing concert will feature the symphony orchestra under the direction of Taras Hubicki, and pianist Boris Maksymowych.

"English and Ukrainian catalogs have been prepared for the art exhibit which includes paintings, graphic art and sculpture, the best of a great number that have been submitted," said Michael Wichorek, member of the committee.
