U.N.A. BOWLING LEAGUE OF N.J. OPENS 14th SEASON

The now traditional opening of its bowling season by the Ukrainian National Association Bowling League of New Jersey took place Friday, September 9th, at the Parkway Bowling Center in Irvington Center, New Jersey. All of last year's ten teams were represented by practically the same players as before, and the matches got off to a flying start, with the Number One team of the Ukrainian American Veterans Post, the Ukrainian Sitch five, and the aggregation from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church winning two games from their respective opponents.

The following Friday night, September 16th, saw the Number One Vets win all three games from the St. John's Holy Name Society five, while the Orthodox Churchmen did the same in their match with the "junior" St. John's Catholic War Veterans. Loosing all three games was quite a setback for the juniors, since they had made an auspicious beginning the week before by winning three.

Sitchman Nick Pletchy blasted the timber for a combo of 590 pins (highest for the evening), which included two twin-century games of 200 and 210. Centerite Mike Gawdun followed up with a series of 586 pins, rolling the night's high single game of 217 pins in the process. With able assists from his team-mates Al Walker and Bill Banit, who scored sets of 554 and 500, respectively, Gawdun's team made a three-game win over the Number Two Veterans group.

In the match between the First Ukrainian P.M.O. five and the Brotherhood of the Holy Ascension, the former won two out of three, while in that between the Ukrainian Sitch and the "senior" St. John's C.W.V. quintet, the Sitchmen did likewise.
