Temple University invites Berdnyk to lecture on Ukrainian futurology

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Temple University here has formally invited internationally known author and poet Oles Berdnyk to deliver a lecture on "Futurology in Ukrainian Literature."

The invitation was extended before it was learned that Berdnyk went on trial in Kiev and was sentenced to six years of imprisonment and three years of exile for his human rights activities.

In her letter, Dr. Norma Furst, dean, wrote: "your reputation, testified by the translations of many of your novels makes you eminently qualified to deliver this lecture for the benefit of our faculty and students."

Dean Furst had said she plans to appeal to Soviet and American dignitaries to help expedite Berdnyk's visit to Philadelphia.

A special faculty-student committee has been formed to work for the success of the project. It includes students Walter Iwaskiw (president of the Temple University Student Club), Roman Bilynsky and Maryann Mychailuk, and Profs. Volodymyr Bandera and Cybriwsky.
