Ukrainian history, language offered at SHU


BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Classes in Ukrainian history and language will be offered by the Continuing Education Division and the Center for Ethnic Studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., during the spring semester. Registration for these courses will be held January 10 through 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the SHU Center Lounge. The spring semester begins January 17.

"Elementary Ukrainian II" aims to provide the student with reading ability, audio comprehension and moderate oral ability of the Ukrainian language through a combination of lectures, drills and lab work. Classes will meet Monday evenings from 7:15 to 10.

The struggle for national survival, independence and unification of Ukraine from 1900 to the present will be the focus of Twentieth Century Ukrainian History and Culture. Offered Tuesday evenings from 7:15 to 10, the course will place emphasis on the political, social, cultural and economic problems of Ukraine, as well as a look at Ukraine as an object of the international struggle; its partition among four neighbors in the 1920; unification under the Communist regime; membership in the United Nations; the liquidation of Churches; destruction of the Ukrainian intellectual and cultural life; national minorities in Ukraine; the dissident movement; and the Ukrainians in the free world.
