1980: an overview

Hostage

Another political prisoner, Michael Metrinko, the 33-year-old Ukrainian American among the hostages being held in Iran, is spending his 421st day in captivity. Significantly, President Jimmy Carter specially referred to the American hostages in this year's Human Rights Day proclamation issued on December 10.

The Ukrainian community, ever mindful of the plight of the hostages, celebrated liturgy in Mr. Metrinko's hometown of Olympahnt, Pa., and in many other cities, offered prayers for the hostages' release. Many organizations, including the UNA also called on their members to send Christmas greetings to Mr. Metrinko thus affirming their moral support.
