Nowytski film receives award

ST. PAUL, Minn. - "Grass On the Roof," a lighthearted documentary film by producer director Slavko Nowytski, was recently awarded the silver medal from the International Film and Television Festival of New York.

At this festival professionals from all parts of the world compete for coveted awards presented on the basis of stringent standards of selection and presentation.

Mr. Nowytski's film was selected from among hundreds of entries and marks the second time that a film of his has won a major prize at this film festival. (The first film to be selected was "Immortal Image," a film about sculptor Leo Mol.)

Mr. Nowytski's firm, Filmart Productions, was commissioned by the Underground Space Center at the University of Minnesota to produce this film for worldwide distribution.

The dramatized script was written by Lance Belville, an award-winning playwright, who has currently completed scripts for Mr. Nowytski's two upcoming films commissioned by the Ukrainian National Association.

Initial filming for the UNA project has already been completed in early Ukrainian settlements in Pennsylvania, particularly in Shamokin. Yuri Denysenko, a Ukrainian cameraman, was Mr. Nowytski's director of photography for that segment of the filming. Mr. Denysenko had previously worked on Mr. Nowytski's award-winning film "Kung-Fu Master: Gin Foon Mark" as second-unit cameraman.

One UNA film deals with membership benefits and the other documents the Ukrainian experience in the United States, beginning with the early immigration to this country. This historical film will be shot in various locations throughout the country and will require more than a year to complete.
