1981: an overview

Shevchenko in N.Y.

One hundred twenty years after the death of Taras Shevchenko, yet another monument was erected in tribute to the poet laureate of Ukraine - this one in Elmira Heights, N.Y. It is the third monument to Shevchenko on public land in the United States. The monument - designed by Mychajlo Czereszniowsky who incorporated a bas-relief by the late Anton Pavlos - was unveiled in ceremonies on August 23. It stands in a park named in honor of Shevchenko and located across the street from St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.
