Batiouk named envoy to Canada

OTTAWA - Viktor Batiouk, Ukraine's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, was named Ukraine's second ambassador to Canada on December 17.

Mr. Batiouk, 54, succeeds Levko Lukianenko, who announced his resignation in September and returned to Ukraine in early November. But unlike Ambassador Lukianenko, a former politician, Mr. Batiouk will arrive in Ottawa on January 25 as a seasoned diplomat.

A graduate of the State Institute for Foreign Relations in Moscow, the Ukrainian-born diplomat joined the Ukrainian SSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1962. Six years later, he joined Ukraine's Permanent Mission to the U.N. where he remained until 1973.

From 1978 to 1984, he served as Ukraine's ambassador to the world body in Geneva and was named newly independent Ukraine's ambassador to the U.N. in New York in 1992 until now.

Mr. Batiouk, fluent in Canada's official languages (English and French), is married with three children. He has also published his poetry and has translated Mario Puzo's "The Godfather" into Ukrainian.

On February 10, Ambassador-designate Batiouk will present his credentials to Governor General Ramon Hnatyshyn at a ceremony in Ottawa.

Ukraine has been represented in Ottawa since May 1992.
