Rabbi Lincoln to be presented UAJC's award

CHICAGO - The Ukrainian American Justice Committee (UAJC), an anti-defamation society founded in 1984, will present a human relations award to Rabbi David H. Lincoln on Sunday, March 12, in recognition of the rabbi's many years of devotion to improving Ukrainian-Jewish relations.

The ceremony, organized in cooperation with the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) and the Heritage Defense Committee of the Ukrainian National Association (UNA), will take place at Ss. Volodymyr and Olha Church Hall, Superior and Oakley streets, at noon. The pubic is invited.

Rabbi Lincoln was the first Jewish American to challenge the recent "60 Minutes" broadcast claiming that anti-Semitism is rampant in the newly independent Ukrainian state.

"It really is time," wrote Rabbi Lincoln, "for us to enjoy the resurgence of Jewish life in Ukraine after the horrors of the German occupation and communism, and to appreciate the heroic efforts of the Ukrainian people and government to assist the Jewish community in all their endeavors."

"Today," concluded the rabbi, "when Russian Jews send their children to Ukraine for safekeeping in times of danger, no good can come from distortions such as those portrayed in your program."

Even though he was later urged by Morley Safer and Jeffrey Fager of CBS to retract his statement, Rabbi Lincoln courageously stood has ground.

"The entire Ukrainian community is grateful to Rabbi Lincoln for his willingness to stand up for the truth," stated Myron B. Kuropas, UAJC co-chairman.

"If we are ever to win our war with defamation," declared Roman Golash, UAJC co-chairman, "we must recognize and honor our friends in other communities who are willing to come to our defense."

"All Ukrainians in the Chicagoland area are urged to attend this milestone event as a demonstration of solidarity against CBS and those who would defile our people," said Walter Tun, UAJC executive director.
