Two fraternal groups begin merger talks

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A preliminary meeting between representatives of the Ukrainian National Association and the Ukrainian National Aid Association of America was held here on Saturday, December 16, to discuss negotiations toward a merger between the two fraternal organizations.

The UNA General Assembly voted during its special meeting on November 18-19 to approve negotiations with the UNAAA as well as the Ukrainian Fraternal Association.

The General Assembly also approved a special committee to negotiate the merger on behalf of the UNA. Its members are President Ulana Diachuk, Secretary Martha Lysko, Treasurer Alexander Blahitka and Walter Sochan, honorary member of the General Assembly and long-time supreme secretary of the UNA. Vice-President Nestor Olesnycky is the committee's legal adviser.

This committee met with three representatives of the Ukrainian National Aid Association: President Wolodymyr Mazur, Vice-President for Canada Wolodymyr Okipniuk and Secretary-Treasurer Odarka J. Roberts. Two other members of the UNAAA's negotiating team, Vice-President Peter Paluch and Lev Futala, honorary member, were unable to attend.

The first meeting of the two fraternals' representatives focused on ways to effect a merger, requirements of state insurance departments and the logistics of a merger. Their next meeting will take place in 1996.
