UCC leadership plans activity


WINNIPEG - The new executive and presidium of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress headquarters met in Winnipeg on December 9, 1995, to begin planning the UCC's activities for the next three years.

UCC President Oleh Romaniw opened the executive meeting by welcoming all members. They then proceeded with the election of executive officers by secret ballot.

The following individuals were elected: Eugene Czolij (UCC Quebec Provincial Council), first vice-president; Sonja Bejzyk (Ukrainian Canadian Women's Committee, national executive), second vice-president; Ewstachij Dzwonyk (Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada), secretary general; and Sophia Kachor (Plast), treasurer.

The first meeting of the new UCC presidium began at the conclusion of the executive meeting. Presidium members received an orientation, which included, a detailed outline of their duties and responsibilities.

The UCC presidium reviewed the resolutions passed at the XVIII Convention of Ukrainian Canadians and referred them to the appropriate committees for follow-up and recommendations on their implementation.

The following were elected to chair the various UCC working committees: Lesia Szwaluk (UCC Manitoba Provincial Council), Strategic Planning; Myroslava Pidhirnyj (SUM), Canada-Ukraine Relations; Mr. Czolij, Constitution; Adrian Boyko (UCC Saskatchewan Provincial Council), Government Relations; Orysia Sushko (Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada), Communications; Ms. Bejzyk, Education; Robert Herchak (UCC British Columbia Provincial Council), Community Development; Ms. Kachor, Finance; and Eugen Duvalko (Canadian Ukrainian Immigrant Aid Society) Immigration.

In other business, the UCC presidium reaffirmed the decision to hold the 19th Congress of Ukrainian Canadians in 1998 in Edmonton. It also chose Toronto as the site for the UCC Annual Conference in October or November of 1996.

In addition to reviewing the president's report and that of the Finance Committee and the Convention Committee, presidium members also were briefed and updated on the activities of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation and the Canada-Ukraine Partners Program.

The UCC presidium also formed an ad hoc committee to begin preparations for the commemoration in 1996 of the 10th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster and the fifth anniversary of Ukraine's independence.
