Artist's stationery promotes heritage

UNIONTOWN, Ohio - A new way of expressing the Ukrainian heritage is being implemented by a Ukrainian artist living in Ternopil, western Ukraine. Yuri Kryvoruchko has created numerous pen-and-ink portrayals of old Ukrainian folklore themes which have been redesigned onto letterheads and other paper products.

The artist explained, "I strive to create within the viewer a link between the present and a respect for the remembrance of time passed. I have set myself a goal to enlighten a new generation on the good traditions and customs of Ukraine."

Letter paper and other paper products (memo pads, bookmarkers and business cards) were chosen by Mr. Kryvoruchko as the medium for illustrating Ukrainian folk art because he believes these items are frequently used for communicating with one another.

Mr. Kryvoruchko's artwork has been exhibited not only within Ukraine, where he works and resides, but also in Philadelphia along with the works of other Ukrainian artists at an exhibit last August commemorating the fourth anniversary of Ukraine's independence.

It is worth noting also that Mr. Kryvoruchko's pen-and-ink renditions in 1993 portrayed Ukraine's rise to independence with an image that was transferred onto a shift design and presented to Ukrainian figure skaters Oksana Baiul and Viktor Petrenko during their U.S. tour.
