St. Vladimir Institute offers Ukrainian cooking classes


TORONTO - A series of eight classes in two semesters with Hanya Cirka, designed to show how traditional dishes are prepared using local ingredients and utensils, will be held at St. Vladimir Institute. Several variations will be shown to demonstrate how easy it is to stretch a basic dough or how many different dishes can be made from basic ingredients. Classes include sampling of all prepared dishes as well as handouts with recipes and tips to assist in preparation of traditional dishes.

The series, which began on October 27 with a course called varenyky varia-tions, continues with the following classes in the fall to be held Mondays, 6:30-9 p.m.: November 10, holubtsi (cabbage rolls) and kapusta (sauerkraut) variations; November 24, borsch, kutia and fish dishes; and December 8, menu for Sviat Vechir (Christmas Eve).

In the spring classes will be held Tuesdays, 6:30-9 p.m.: March 24, Easter breads; April 7, Easter basket foods; April 21, Chicken Kyiv dinner and syrnyk (baked cheesecake); and May 5, roast pork dinner with nalysnyky (crepes).
