- NEWARK, N.J.: The New Jersey Regional Council of Ukrainian National
Women's League of America invites the public to a meeting with Lida Czernyk,
UNWLA social welfare chairperson, who will give an eyewitness account of
the damage caused by the flooding in Zakarpattia and the UNWLA's charitable
work in the region. The public meeting will take place in the hall of St.
John's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Sandford Avenue, at 7 p.m.
- NEW YORK: The Mayana Gallery, in association with M. James Fine Art,
invites the public to an exhibition of black and white works on paper by
Chinese-American Master Dong Kingman and recent paintings by Lauren Barnes,
his former student. The reception will be held on Friday, May 14, at 6:30

- NEW YORK: The 23 annual Ukrainian Festival, sponsored by St. George
Ukrainian Catholic Church, will be held in the East Village at East Seventh
Street (between Second and Third avenues). The festival opens Friday, May
14, at 4 p.m.-11 p.m. and continues Saturday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m., and Sunday,
1-10 p.m. There will be booths featuring Ukrainian food, as well as Ukrainian
arts and crafts for sale. The Dumka Choir, under the direction of Wasyl
Hrechynskyj, will give a concert in the church on Sunday, May 16, at 1
p.m. Appearing as part of the weekend events will be musicians, singers
and Ukrainian folk dance ensembles. Free admission.
- NEW YORK: The Single Ukrainian Weekenders are holding their annual
Ukrainian Festival Weekend Celebration, starting with dancing on Friday
at Webster Hall located at 125 E. 11th St., at 10 p.m. Admission: women,
free; men, $15. (For the discounted admission ask for Lisa at the door
and tell them you are with Baird Jones. We will meet on the first floor
in the bar seating area.) The weekend will continue with dancing at Le

- NEW YORK: The Shevchenko Scientific Society is holding a lecture by
Dr. Leo Chirovsky of the research division, Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies,
on the topic: "Vertical Semiconductor Lasers and their Application
in Communication in the 21st Century." The lecture will be held at

- SILVER SPRING, Md.: Ukrainian National Women's League of America Branch
78 in Washington invites all to attend their Cabaret Night and Live Auction
to be held at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral Center, 15100 New
Hampshire Ave., beginning at 6:30 p.m. The evening will feature performances
by Marianna Vynnytska, soprano, and Myroslav Skoryk, piano. Taras Charchalis
will be master of ceremonies for the event. Items to be auctioned include
original artwork, crystal, porcelain and fine craftwork. Admission is $15,
payable at the door, and includes a buffet; there will be a cash bar. For

- HAYWARD, Calif.: The opening of State Park Ukraina will take place
at Garin Regional Park, the burial site of the Rev. Agapius Honcharenko
(1832-1916) - Orthodox priest, publicist and first Ukrainian political
émigré to the United States. The event starts at 10 a.m.
with brief speeches by dignitaries from Ukraine, Canada and the United
States. A liturgy and an entertainment program will follow. A festive dinner
will be held in San Francisco at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Hall at

- HARTFORD, Conn.: The artist Rem Bahautdin, well-known for his lyrical
and elegant works in silver and brass metal relief, will be in Hartford
with an exhibit and sale at the school hall of St. Michael's Ukrainian
Catholic Church, 125-135 Wethersfield Ave., on Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.,
and Sunday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The exhibit is sponsored by the Children of Chornobyl
Relief Fund, Greater Hartford Chapter. All proceeds will benefit CCRF.

- NEW YORK: Adrian Bryttan will conduct the New Jersey Youth Symphony
at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center in works by Vivaldi, Richard Strauss,
Benjamin Britten and a world premiere by Ludmila Ulehla. Cello soloist
will be Maria Kitsopoulos of the New York Philharmonic. The concert, which
is being held as part of the symphony's 20th season anniversary, begins

- NEWARK, N.J.: The Young Adults Group of St. John's (Newark, N.J.) and
Immaculate Conception (Hillside, N.J.) Ukrainian Catholic parishes are
holding a lecture titled "How to Stay Positive in a Very Negative
World." Gerry Tchir, associate professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University
(Madison, N.J.) and the College of St. Elizabeth (Morristown, N.J.), will
present the seminar. Mr. Tchir has previously presented numerous motivational
presentations throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, and has been
very well received. He is president of Creative Solutions Unlimited, a
professional training and management consulting organization and is the
author of the book titled "Dare to be Great." The seminar will
begin at 11 a.m. in the church basement of St. John's, located at 719 Sandford

- JENKINTOWN, Pa.: The School of the Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble
will host its annual spring festival at St. Michael's Church on 1013 Fox
Chase Road. The festival begins at 1 p.m.; there will be a performance
by the Voloshky School and Voloshky Ensemble at 2:30 p.m. There will be
food and entertainment for everyone. It is an open-air performance and
we recommend you bring lawn chairs so that you can watch the show in comfort.

- TORONTO: The Scholarly Council of the Ukrainian World Congress, jointly
with Ukrainian Learned Institutions, is holding a conference on "Ukrainian
Scholarly Life in the Diaspora." The conference will be held in the
conference room of the Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Center,
620 Spadina Ave., at 2:30 p.m. The public is invited.

- CLEVELAND: The Cleveland Chamber Symphony, in the last concert of the
season titled "Visionary Ukrainians and Pop Americans," will
give the world premiere of Virko Baley's Symphony No. 1 "Sacred Monuments";
the U.S. premiere of Yuri Laniuk's "The Thorn's Sorrow" for soprano
and orchestra, with Eileen Moore, soprano; and Phillip Ratliff's "Travolta."
The concert will be conducted by Maestro Baley, principal guest conductor
of the Kiev Camerata and professor of composition at the University of
Nevada, Las Vegas. Symphony No. 1 was commissioned by the New Juilliard
Ensemble and the Cleveland Chamber Symphony with funds provided by Dr.
W. Howard Hoffman. The four-part symphony pays homage to Ukraine's four
great composers: Maksym Berezovsky, Artem Vedel, Dmytro Bortniansky and
Borys Liatoshynsky. The concert will be held in the Drinko Recital Hall
at Cleveland State University's Music Building at 8 p.m.

- SILVER SPRING, Md.: The Taras Shevchenko School of Ukrainian Studies
will hold a graduation dance for its students and their families at the
St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral Center, 15100 New Hampshire Ave.
Cocktails are at 7 p.m., followed by the presentation of graduates at 8
p.m. The public is invited. Music will be provided by the Mykola and Liuba

- RIVER FORREST, Ill.: The 50th anniversary concert of the Ukrainian
American Youth Association (SUM), Chicago Branch, will be held at the Lund
Auditorium of the Dominican University, 7900 W. Division St., at 3 p.m.
The Ukraina dance ensemble and the School of Ukrainian Dance will be performing.
Also performing will be combined groups, organized for the 50th anniversary,
of previous and new members of the SUM bands, choirs, theater groups, string
ensemble and the Chervona Ruta vocal ensemble. Tickets, at $15 and $10,

- CHICAGO: The Chicago Regional Council of the Ukrainian National Women's
League of America will host the 25th UNWLA Convention at the Westin O'Hare
Hotel in Rosemont. In addition to plenary sessions, there will be presentations,
seminars, workshops, elections of new officers, performances and cultural
activities, including a tour of downtown Chicago and the Ukrainian Village.
On Friday evening, May 28, there will be a pre-convention panel on human
rights. The public is invited to a special gala banquet on Saturday, May
29, featuring cellist Natalia Choma, who will be performing with her 12-year-old

- SASKATOON, Sask.: An exhibit of pottery by Winnipeg artist Marusia
Foster is on exhibit at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, 910 Spadina Crescent
E. The exhibit opened with a reception on May 2, and will run through June
20. Ms. Foster produces a wide range of work, mainly in high-temperature
reduction-fired porcelain, from one-of-a-kind pieces for decoration to
a variety of functional pottery for everyday use. A graduate of the University
of Manitoba, she has traveled and worked in Europe and North Africa, where
she became interested in working with clay. She has taken part in exhibitions
across Canada, and has work in the permanent collection of the Winnipeg
