Soyuzivka holds first tourney of the season: Eastern Tennis Championships of USCAK

KERHONKSON, N.Y. - Only seven brave souls participated in the first tennis tournament of the season at Soyuzivka, the Eastern Championships of the Ukrainian Sports Federation of the U.S.A. and Canada (known by its Ukrainian acronym USCAK), due to the stifling heat and humidity that gripped the Eastern Seaboard over the Independence Day weekend.

Another 20 or so prospective tourney participants opted out of the competition, choosing the cooler waters of the Soyuzivka pool over the hot tennis courts.

The tournament was played in one day, Saturday, July 3.

In the men's group, Oleh Zaputowych emerged the winner by defeating George Sawchak (who, although a senior, chose to play with the men in order to round out the group), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and O. Kuchma in two sets by the twin scores of 6-1.

The final in the men's group, comprising four players, was between George Petrykewych and Jaroslaw Tymkiw, with the former winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. In the semifinals Mr. Petrykewych had eliminated John Szwanyk, 6-2, 6-1, while Mr. Tymkiw had ousted Wolodymyr Dziwak, 6-2, 6-1.

The tournament was conducted by Mr. Sawchak, tennis director of the USCAK. Trophies, funded by the Carpathian Ski Club (KLK), were presented by the club's president, George Popel, and Roman Rakoczy Sr.

The next tennis tournament at the upstate New York resort of the Ukrainian National Association is the doubles competition slated for July 31-August 1.
