Governor honors Las Vegas artist

LAS VEGAS - Zoria Zetaruk, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, won the Governor's Millennium Art Award for excellence in folk art. Presented by the Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Humanities Committee, the award was bestowed upon Mrs. Zetaruk on November 4, 1999, in a ceremony recognizing those who have significantly added to the cultural legacy of Nevada.

Gov. Kenny C. Guinn presented the award before a dinner crowd of 500 at the Las Vegas Government Center.

Mrs. Zetaruk's work has previously been recognized by the City of Las Vegas who sponsored a three-week exhibit of her pysanky. The State of Nevada has put 12 of her creations on permanent display in the Nevada State Museum in the capitol in Carson City.

Now in her 80s, "Mrs. Z" continues to hold classes on a weekly basis, while continuing to visit local schools and libraries, demonstrating and lecturing, to keep alive the ancient and beautiful art of writing Ukrainian pysanky.

Mrs. Zetaruk and her husband, George, are charter members of the Ukrainian American Club of Las Vegas .
