Shcherbak named envoy to Canada


KYIV - President Leonid Kuchma on March 10 issued a decree naming Dr. Yuri Shcherbak as Ukraine's ambassador to Canada.

Another decree named Ambassador Shcherbak as Ukraine's representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization, a Montreal-based body that promotes international civil aviation standards and regulations.

Dr. Shcherbak, 65, served as Ukraine's ambassador to the United States in 1994-1998. Afterwards he was tapped to serve as President Kuchma's foreign affairs advisor. Previously he was Ukraine's ambassador to Israel in 1992-1994.

A physician and writer, he is a former minister of the environment (1991-1992), founder and chairman of the Green World environmental movement, and former chairman of the Green Party of Ukraine. He was elected in 1989 to the USSR Congress of People's Deputies.
