UUARC rushes aid to miners' families

PARSIPPANY, N.J. - The United Ukrainian American Relief Committee has rushed financial aid to the families of the 81 miners killed in the March 11 coal mine disaster at the Barakova mine near Krasdonon.

According to the UUARC's executive director, Stepan Hawrysz, the charitable organization's Kyiv office representative, Vira Prynko, left for the region on March 15. She is to personally present financial assistance of $200 (U.S.) to each grieving family.

Mr. Hawrysz noted that this charitable mission is a continuation of the UUARC's longstanding history of helping the unfortunate, whether they are refugees, victims of natural disaster or others in need.

The UUARC has also announced a fund-raising drive to help the families of those who perished in the Krasnodon area. Donations may be sent to: United Ukrainian American Relief Committee, 1206 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19111; checks should be made payable to the UUARC with the notation "miners' families."

In related news, the Ukrainian American Coordinating Council on March 15 issued a statement from its Washington Office calling on Ukrainian Americans to send aid through organizations that already operate in Ukraine, such as the Coordinating Committee to Aid Ukraine and the Ukrainian Gold Cross. The UACC also cited the fund-raising campaign announced by the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation (see story below).
