A Ukrainian Summer: where to go, what to do...
SUM summertime: an array of camps and activities
by Peter Kosciolek
ELLENVILLE, N.Y. - Summertime allows SUM youth to attend an array of
specialized camps designed to offer young Ukrainians opportunities for interpersonal
contact and mutual support, and to stimulate their spiritual, intellectual,
social, cultural and physical development. Campgrounds are located at SUM
sites in Baraboo, Wisc., Ellenville, N.Y., Kholodnyi Yar in Fillmore, N.Y.,
Khortytsia in Huntington, Ohio; and Kyiv near Detroit.
SUM camps this summer include the following.
- SUMeniata Camp is a day camp with a complete Ukrainian preschool program
for children age 4-6 (at Ellenville and Baraboo).
- Overnight Recreational Camp offers a full camping experience in the
Ukrainian spirit (at Ellenville, Baraboo, Kholodnyi Yar and Khortytsia).
- Survival Skills River Camp's first week is spent learning practical
survival skills (in the woods at the Ellenville resort) that are implemented
during the second week on a canoe trip at Mount Tremblant National Park
in Quebec. (A hiking-survival camp will also be held at Khortytsia).
- Counselor-in-Training Camp is a three-year program, that includes in-depth
studies of Ukrainian language, history, culture, current events and politics,
while stimulating social and cultural development among 14- to 18-year-olds
(at Ellenville).

volleyball, tennis, track and swimming, while emphasizing sportsmanlike
conduct and discipline. The camp is open to children age 10 and up (at
