A Ukrainian Summer: where to go, what to do...

Orthodox camps slated for Emlenton

by Victor Bucharew

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Archdiocesan Church School Camp of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church will be held this summer at All Saints Camp in Emlenton, Pa. Registration for campers age 9 through 13 begins at 3 p.m. on July 23. The encampment departure will be on Saturday, July 29, at 1 p.m.

This year's theme, "Entering the New Millenium with Christ," will be taught in a camp atmosphere that promotes good Christian growth and principles.

Campers will swim, play soccer, volleyball, basketball, etc., as well as dance like Kozaks and write pysanky - all in addition to learning about their Ukrainian heritage, language, culture and faith.

The skills, knowledge, and patience of the staff are outstanding. They are solid in their faith and responsibly enjoy camping. For more information contact the Rev. Timothy Tomson, (724) 287-4448.

After the church school camp, the Emlenton site will host the Teenage Conference for youths age 12-18, an event organized annually by the Central Eparchy of the UOC/U.S.A. According to Charissa Martin, coordinator of this year's conference, special emphasis will be placed on acknowledging the millennium of the birth of Christ.

The theme for this year's youth camp/conference, which will be held July 30 - August 5, is "The Millennium 2000 Experience: A Changeless Christ in a Changing Age."

The Rev. Michael Zak from Canada will hold a seminar for the youth, "Let the Millennium Come and Go, Jesus Remains Changeless," to discuss how to hold steadfast to the teachings of Christ in a rapidly changing age.

The weeklong event, which focuses on instruction about the Ukrainian heritage and Orthodox faith, will also include religious workshops, including explanations and demonstrations of the Orthodox tradition of a special prayer corner in the home, as well as cultural demonstrations, including a bandura workshop by Nadia Tarnawsky, basic Ukrainian dance instruction and lessons in traditional Ukrainian folk arts.
