A Ukrainian Summer: where to go, what to do...

Minersville hosts Seminary Day

by Peter Yaroshak

MINERSVILLE, Pa. - The Shamokin Deanery, with 14 Ukrainian Catholic churches of Schuylkill, Luzerne, Columbia and Northumberland counties comprising the South Anthracite Deanery of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, will sponsor the 66th annual Ukrainian Seminary Day on Sunday, July 30, here at St. Nicholas Picnic Grove.

All funds raised are given to support St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Seminary in Washington, for the education of seminarians. Since 1985 this annual one-day event has raised over a quarter of a million dollars for the seminary.

This year's event begins at noon and runs until 8 p.m. There will be plenty of delicious Ukrainian and Slavic foods, as well as coal-region delicacies, displays and sales of Ukrainian crafts, and diverse exhibits.

At 11 a.m., a divine liturgy will be celebrated by the Metropolitan-Archbishop Stephen Sulyk of Philadelphia and clergy of the deanery in St. Nicholas Hall on the grove grounds.

Starting at 1:30 p.m., St. Michael's, Ukrainian Dancers and the Kazka Ukrainian Troupe of Lehighton, Pa., will perform, followed by the music of the Shoreliners orchestra at 4-8 p.m.

So, on Sunday, July 30, forget about cooking and entertaining at home and come to the 66th Ukrainian Catholic Seminary Day at St. Nicholas Picnic Grove off Route 901 in Primrose, Minersville, Pa. There is free admission and free parking (no food or beverages may be brought from the outside).

To raise additional funds in support of the seminary, an advertising book is being prepared for individuals, churches or businesses. The deadline date for ads is June 15; contact Paul Spotts at (570) 874-3777.
