A Ukrainian Summer: where to go, what to do...

Grazhda site of annual music festival

HUNTER, N.Y. - The highlight of the 18th summer season of the Music and Art Center of Greene County, with Dr. Ihor Sonevytsky, music director, and Volodymyr Vynnytsky, artist-in-residence, is the classical music festival held in the Catskills at the Grazhda in August.

Also planned is a diverse program of talks and theater presentations for the month of July, as well as workshops in Ukrainian folk arts. The Grazhda, part of the landmark St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church complex, is located off Route 23 A on Ukraine Road.

Appearing in this summer's concert series are: Natalia Khoma, cello; Volodymyr Vynnytsky, piano; Alexander Slobodyanik, piano; Roman Tsymbala, tenor; Anna Bachynska, soprano; Solomia Soroka, violin; Myroslav Skoryk, composer; and Anna Kovalko, soprano (see A Ukrainian Summer Calendar on page 24 for performance dates). The concerts are held on Saturdays at 8 p.m.

The center also organizes workshops in Ukrainian folk arts such as ceramics, pysanky-making, bead-stringing (gerdany), as well as folk singing for children during the last week of July and first week of August.
