A Ukrainian Summer: where to go, what to do...

Sheptytsky Institute summer program to be held in Ontario

by the Rev. Dr. Andrew T. Onuferko

OTTAWA - After 13 successful Summer Intensive Programs in Eastern Christian Theology and Spirituality held at Holy Transfiguration (Mount Tabor) Monastery in California, the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute at St. Paul University is changing venues this year.

The young and vibrant community of Studite monks at Mother of God Monastery in Orangeville, Ontario, has invited the Sheptytsky Institute to offer its summer programs there. The monastery is only an hour northwest of Toronto, which allows for easy access to the many dynamic Eastern Christian communities of the Greater Toronto Area. Visiting a wide variety of Eastern Churches (such as Armenian, Coptic, Assyrian and other Byzantine communities) has always been one of the most exciting and acclaimed features of the Sheptytsky Institute Summer Program.

Offering the program in Ontario also makes it possible for the Sheptytsky Institute to reduce costs and lower fees to $1,975 (Canadian), instead of $1,575 (U.S.) as in previous years. This includes tuition for six university credits, as well as room and board for four weeks and field trips. Travel to and from the program is separate.

This year's courses - offered June 24-July 22 - include team-taught "Theology and Spirituality of Icons" under the leadership of Institute Director the Rev. Andriy Chirovsky, as well as "Ecclesiology in East and West" taught by Prof. Jaroslav Skira. Some bursaries are available for qualifying Ontario residents. The program is open to men and women, priests, religious and laity.

As well, this summer the institute will co-sponsor its fifth summer program in Univ, Ukraine, together with the Lviv Theological Academy, with Prof. Volodymyr Mezentsev teaching "Byzantine and East Slavic Architecture" and Prof. Andrew Sorokowski teaching "Eastern Christian History."
