Summer at Harvard promises much diversity

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute (HUSI) will celebrate its 30th year this summer from June 26 to August 18. The only program of its kind in North America, HUSI offers eight weeks of intensive accredited university instruction in Ukrainian studies.

This summer's faculty will include Prof. Yaroslav Hrytsak of Ivan Franko University in Lviv, who will teach Ukrainian history; Prof. Maxim Tarnawsky of the University of Toronto, who will teach Ukrainian literature; and Prof. Myroslava Mudrak of Ohio State University, who will teach a course on modern Ukrainian art history. Ukrainian language will be taught by Natalia Shostak and Yuri Shevchuk on the beginning and intermediate levels, and by Dr. Volodymyr Dibrova of Harvard on the advanced level.

The HUSI director will be Dr. James Clem, executive director of the Ukrainian Research Institute.

As in past years, a full schedule of extracurricular cultural and scholarly events is planned, including an exhibit by internationally renowned photographer Wilton Tifft; a reading by Irene Zabytko, author of "The Sky Unwashed"; a presentation on Ukraine and the Internet by the founders of Brama.com; and various films and musical events.

Students can still register for the program by June 1 without paying a late fee. After June 1, a $50 late fee will be charged. Tuition for the eight-week program is $2,100 and covers eight to 12 credits.
