Ukrainian World Congress

NEW YORK - The president of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), Askold S. Lozynskyj, met on May 1 with Ukraine's Foreign Affairs Minister Borys Tarasyuk. The meeting, initiated by the minister, took place at Ukraine's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City.

Minister Tarasyuk provided an overview of President Leonid Kuchma's economic, social and political reforms underway in Ukraine and highlighted the President's desire to establish an even closer working relationship with the diaspora.

Mr. Lozynskyj furnished an assessment of the diaspora's role both as a facilitator and beneficiary of Ukraine's reform efforts, as well as an analysis of the current political climate in the United States, including issues such as normal trade relations, foreign aid, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the presidential elections, etc.

Mr. Tarasyuk agreed to meet with a UWC delegation in Kyiv in late May to discuss substantive issues of cooperation. The UWC is currently preparing a memorandum on the relationship between Ukraine and its diaspora which will be submitted shortly to the president, prime minister, ministers and Verkhovna Rada leadership for consideration and discussion.
