Immaculate Conception High bids farewell to 16 graduates


WARREN, Mich. - Commencement exercises for the Class of 2000 of Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic High School began after divine liturgy concelebrated by Bishop Michael Wiwchar CSsR, the Rev. Roberto Lucavei OSBM and the Rev. Danel Schaikoski OSBM, on Sunday, June 3, at Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hamtramck, Mich. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Stephen Chrepta served as chaplain to the bishop.

Bishop Wiwchar conferred a special blessing upon the graduating seniors, congratulated the students on their accomplishments and conferred diplomas. He reminded the students not to attach themselves to this world.

The pastor and superior at Immaculate Conception Parish, the Rev. Lucavei, greeted seniors as Michaeline Weigle, principal, distributed scholarships awarded to the Class of 2000.

Special honors were conferred on Valedictorian Lee Cole and Salutatorian Marko Melymuka, who both received full, four-year academic scholarships: Mr. Cole to Hillsdale College and Marko to Wayne State University. Mr. Melymuka will be attending the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor to study biomedical engineering.

Certificates of Recognition awarded by the Michigan State Board of Education and the Michigan Higher Assistance Authority recognized the following students who scored above the 90th percentile in the State of Michigan Competitive Scholarship Program: Mr. Cole, Andrij Hnatiuk, Anna Koniuch, Anne Maziak, Mr. Melymuka, Daniel Menzo, John Pullis and Adam Stacey. Mr. Cole and Anne Maziak were named distinguished finalists in the National Scholarship Program.

Additional city, county and academic scholarships were awarded, including private scholarships granted by numerous Ukrainian organizations, among them: Buhay Chapel (Christopher Buhay); Ukrainian Future Credit Union; Ukrainian Selreliance Michigan Federal Credit Union; Women's Association for Defense of Four Freedoms for Ukraine; Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic High School Parents Club; Ukrainian American Coordinating Council, Metropolitan Detroit Branch; Ukrainian National Association (Dr. Alexander Serafyn); Mitchell P. Shewchun; Ukrainian National Women's League of America Branch 76; Zenon and Martha Wasylkevych; EDS Management Center; St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Parish; Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Parish, Immaculate Conception Schools in memory of the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Stephen V. Knapp, PhD., S.T.L., mitred archpriest.

As the 38th graduating class of 16 seniors left Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic High School, it will be replaced by 20 freshmen who have registered for the upcoming 2000-2001 school year.
