- NEW YORK: The Shevchenko Scientific Society presents a lecture by Tetiana
Hoshko, assistant professor, Lviv State University, on the topic "German
Colonization and the Spread of the Magdeburg Law in Ukraine." The

- NEW YORK: Dr. Pavlo Stetsenko, organist, and Beverly Owens, soprano,
will present a retrospective program of Max Reger's organ and vocal works.
The concert, which begins at 4 p.m., is part of St. Andrew Music Society's
Fall 2000 Keyboard Concert Series, held annually at Madison Avenue Presbyterian

- ARLINGTON, Va.: The Washington Group Cultural Fund in cooperation with
the Embassy of Ukraine presents Solomiya Ivakhiv, violinist, and Christina
Anum-Dorhuso, pianist, at The Rosslyn Spectrum Theater in the second concert
of a series to raise funds for musical instruments at the Lviv Conservatory.
The program includes works by Kos-Anatolskyi, Liudkevych, Skoryk and Stankovych,
as well as Beethoven, Liszt and Sarasate. Both Ukrainian artists are prize
winners of international competitions and are currently at the Curtis Institute
of Music. Tickets at the door, $20; seniors and students, $15. The theater
is located at 1611 N. Kent St., (two blocks east of Rosslyn Metro Station).
Free garage parking is available in the rear of the building off Arlington

- CAMBRIDGE, Mass.: The Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute will present
a symposium by Drs. Volodymyr Kravchenko, Serhii Kudelko, and Serhii Posokhov
of Kharkiv State University. The symposium, titled "The View from
the East: Kharkiv Historians look at Ukrainian History," will be held
in the institute's seminar room, 1583 Massachusetts Ave., at 3:30-6 p.m.

- BOSTON: Join the Boston Chapter of the Children of Chornobyl Relief
Fund for a concert by the Longwood Symphony Orchestra to benefit the CCRF.

- FOX CHASE MANOR, Pa.: The Sisters of St. Basil are hosting an icon-writing
workshop to be presented by Damian Higgins of Holy Transfiguration Monastery,
Redwood Valley, Calif. For three days students will be instructed in the
traditional method of egg-tempera icon writing. Each participant will learn
to use the various materials and practice the techniques and disciplines
in creating a traditional icon and will be able to take home their own
completed icon. No previous experience or skills needed. Workshop Hours:
Friday, October 27, 7-9 p.m.; Saturday, October 28, 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.;
and Sunday, October 29, 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. The workshop will be held at
the Basilian Spirituality Center, Sisters of St. Basil, 710 Fox Chase Road,
Fox Chase Manor, PA 19046. Weekend workshop fee: $275 (includes materials,
lunch and refreshments). Overnight accommodations not available. Participation

- CHICAGO: The 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian National Women's League
of America will be celebrated by the Chicago Regional Council with a banquet
at the Ukrainian Cultural Center, 2247 W. Chicago Ave. There will be a
cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Opening remarks
at the banquet will be by UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj, followed by
a musical program featuring soprano Lesia Hrabova of New York. For tickets

- SOUTH BOUND BROOK, N.J.: St. Andrew's Brotherhood, in coordination
with the Committee to Aid Ukraine-Central New Jersey, invites the Ukrainian
communities of New York and New Jersey to an evening with Fidel Suchonis,
editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian monthly magazine Borysten. Mr. Suchonis
will present a video film on the preparations that are being made by Serhii
Hordienko in his attempt to be the first Ukrainian to make a solo crossing
by foot from northern Europe to the North Pole, where he plans to place
a Ukrainian flag and then continue walking on to Canada. The film will
be shown in the small church hall next to St. Andrew's Memorial Church,
at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Donations to Mr. Hordienko's
project will be appreciated.

- SKOKIE, Ill.: The Hromovytsia Ukrainian Dance Ensemble will appear
in performance in a concert of Ukrainian folk, ballet and modern dance
at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts at 3 p.m. Enjoy colorful
costumes, dazzling acrobatics and cultural authenticity as the ensemble
performs a fascinating array of dances from various regions of Ukraine.
Appearing with the ensemble as guest artist will be acclaimed violinist
Vasyl Popadiuk. Tickets, at $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and children,

- EDMONTON: The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of
Alberta, is holding a lecture by Nancy Popson, Kennan Institute, Woodrow
Wilson Center, Washington, who will speak on "Nation-Building and
Contested History: A Comparison of Contemporary Textbooks in Ukraine and
the Russian Federation." The lecture will be held at 3:30 p.m. in
