PHILADELPHIA - Dr. Ulrich Schweier of Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich, Germany, in September and October held a series of lectures at several academic institutions and universities on the East Coast.

A linguist who also specializes in Ukrainian studies, Dr. Schweier addressed members of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in New York (September 3) on German-Ukrainian relations in the past decade. He also gave a talk at the Philadelphia Affiliate of the St. Clement Pope Ukrainian Catholic University (October 10).

In both lectures Prof. Schweier offered an overview of the current state of Ukrainian programs in Germany and expressed his gratitude to the government of Bavaria for its unstinting support of Ukrainian studies. He also stressed the benefits of academic cooperation such as that between Ludwig Maximillian University and the Ukrainian Free University in Munich, while emphasizing that Ukraine itself must provide greater support for these worthy academic endeavors.

Upon invitation by Dr. Bernhardt Blumenthal, Prof. Schweier conducted a seminar in the Central and Eastern European Program of La Salle University in Philadelphia where he spoke on the German perception of Eastern Europe (September 2). He also visited the department of foreign languages and literatures, chaired by Dr. Albert Kipa, at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., where he addressed students and professors from the college and neighboring institutions (September 28).

During his brief visit, Prof. Schweier had an opportunity to visit historical monuments in Philadelphia, New York and Washington, and meet with leading Ukrainian American intellectuals and scholars.
