Famine commemoration slated for November 18

NEW YORK - A solemn service to honor the victims of Ukraine's Great Famine of 1932-1933 will be concelebrated on Saturday, November 18, by the Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches.

The service will be held at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue and 51st Street in New York City. The program will also include addresses by prominent religious and civic leaders.

In 1932-1933 between 7 million and 10 million Ukrainians were starved to death as a result of the Soviet policy of forced collectivization. In sheer numbers this genocidal tragedy ranks among the worst cases of man's inhumanity towards man and is perhaps the most extreme example of the use of food as a weapon.

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America is asking the Ukrainian community of New York and surrounding areas not to organize other events for this day and to take part in this national commemoration to honor the victims of our nation's worst tragedy.
