NEW RELEASES: Ukrainian literature in translation


STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Three new volumes in Ukrainian studies have recently appeared as publications of Litopys Publishers and Klasyk Publishers in Lviv.

Klasyk has published a 272-page volume of translation of the prose of Yuri Vynnychuk in the translations of Michael Naydan, with one translation provided by Askold Melnyczuk. The volume is titled "Windows of Time Frozen and Other Stories by Yuri Vynnychuk and contains a wide range of Mr. Vynnychuk's writings from lyro-philosophical pieces like "Windows of Time Frozen" to fantastic tales like "A Cat Named Abel." The paperback includes an introduction by Dr. Naydan and has a selling price of $15.

Litopys Publishers has recently published two bilingual editions of Ukrainian poetry. One is a 430-page bilingual critical edition of "The Complete Early Poetry Collections of Pavlo Tychyna" in Dr. Naydan's translation. Besides translations of Mr. Tychyna's first five collections of poetry, the volume contains introductions by Dr. Naydan and Viktor Neborak, as well as over 200 footnotes to the texts. The paperback edition sells for $25 and the hardback edition for $40.

The other volume, "A Hundred Years of Youth: A Bilingual Anthology of 20th Century Ukrainian Poetry," is an 860-page hardback edition edited by Olha Luchuk and Dr. Naydan. One hundred of the best 20th century Ukrainian poets are included in the volume in the translations of 40 different translators. The volume includes introductory materials by Mykola Ilnytsky, Ms. Luchuk and Dr. Naydan along with extensive biographical notes on all 100 poets and translators by Dr. Luchuk and Dr. Naydan. The hardback volume will have a selling piece of $45.
