OBITUARY: Sister Ignatius Borutska, 90, member of Basilian Order

FOX CHASE MANOR, Pa. - The Sisters of St. Basil the Great lost one of their own, Sister Ignatius Borutska OSBM, on November 21, 2000, the Feast of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Born on December 20, 1909, in Ukraine, Sister's Ignatius' early years were spent in the orphanage of the Basilian Sisters. She entered the community on May 1, 1926, and received final profession in 1941. Throughout her life, she faithfully served in the Ukrainian Catholic schools of the four dioceses in the United States. Much of her time was dedicated to service in the St. Basil orphanages in Philadelphia and Chesapeake City, Md. She also taught in Illinois and New York.

Sister Ignatius retired to the Motherhouse in Fox Chase in 1981. At that time, her ministry was in service to her sisters through a living witness of compassion, understanding and affirmation. Although confined to her bedroom in her last months, Sister Ignatius maintained a keen interest in what was happening in the convent, the order and the world.

The parastas was held on Friday, November 24, in the Holy Trinity Chapel of the Sisters of St. Basil the Great. Sister Ignatius is the first to be buried from this newly dedicated chapel.
