Increase in subscription rate scheduled for beginning of April

As of January 8 U.S. postal authorities have instituted a penny increase in the first-class mailing rate, raising it to 34 cents or increasing by 3 percent. At the same time, many other mailing rates were increased, among them the second-class rate for mailing of news papers and magazines. As a result the mailing costs of The Ukrainian Weekly will go up by 10 percent.

Our printing costs are predicated on the price of the newsprint. After several years of steady prices, the costs of paper went up in October of 2000, and a second price increase is due shortly. These increases will increase our printing expenses, too.

Taking into account the anticipated printing and mailing cost increases, the UNA General Assembly at its annual meeting held on December 1-3, 2000, decided to increase the annual subscription fee for both UNA publications, The Ukrainian Weekly and Svoboda, by $5 for members and non-members alike or by less than 10 cents per issue. The new yearly subscription rate will go into effect as of April 1, 2001. Thus, the price for an annual subscription will be $45 for UNA members and $55 for non-members.

The decision to increase the subscription now was made reluctantly and only because the UNA has no funds to absorb the cost increases. We do not wish to postpone the relatively small increase and be forced to substantially increase the subscription rate in the future. We hope our subscribers will accept this small increase as inevitable in the publishing business.

We thank all our subscribers for their past support, especially for their generous donations to the press funds of each newspaper and promise to serve them and the Ukrainian American and Ukrainian Canadian communities in the future.
