Philadelphia center to raise funds via "Phonothon" on June 4

PHILADELPHIA - The Ukrainian community here is fortunate to have a place like the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center, home to over 40 organizations and the heart of Ukrainian American social and cultural life in the Philadelphia area. A busy calendar of concerts, art exhibits, bazaars and other events offers a variety of activities for all ages.

The center requires a considerable amount of funds to pay for utilities and repairs, office and custodial staff; its yearly operating costs are over $180,000.

Last year the "Phonothon" contributions were earmarked to pay for a new roof, and over $40,000 was raised to pay for part of the project.

This year the UECC wants to upgrade the kitchen facility and must install a sprinkler system, as well as improve the old heating system. The cost of these major improvements is estimated to be over $50,000.

On June 4 the UECC will begin the 2001 Phonothon Campaign. Volunteers will be calling individual households for their financial support.

For information or to contribute contact the UECC at 700 Cedar Road, Jenkintown, PA 19046; telephone, (215) 663-1166.
