Putin urged to make demands on Bush

RFE/RL Newsline

MOSCOW - Gleb Pavlovskii, the director of the Center for Effective Policy and a close Kremlin media adviser, wants President Vladimir Putin to demand at his upcoming summit with U.S. President George W. Bush that Washington give Russia complete freedom to deal with Chechnya, recognize the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) as a zone of Russian interests, write off all of Russia's debts to the West, and give Moscow an equal voice in the G-8 and NATO, the newspapers Izvestia and Nezavisimaya Gazeta reported on October 26.

Mr. Pavlovskii added that failing to make such demands will lead to an uproar among Russians.

Meanwhile, other commentators and politicians are comparing President Putin to Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev to the extent that they say he is making concessions to the West without getting anything in return, Kommersant-Daily reported the same day.
