Onyshkevych receives honorary doctorate from Lviv University


LVIV - Larissa M.L. Zaleska Onyshkevych was awarded an honorary doctorate from Ivan Franko Lviv National University in Ukraine on October 11 in recognition of her contribution to the study of Ukrainian drama and the advancement of Ukrainian studies. As part of her acceptance speech, she gave a presentation on the poetics of pairs of symbol in poems by Taras Shevchenko.

In 1997 Dr. Onyshkevych taught at Lviv University as a Fulbright Senior Scholar and participated in several projects there. Dr. Onyshkevych's specialization is in Ukrainian and comparative drama; she is the author of over 60 studies on the subject published both in Ukrainian and English.

She is the author and compiler of the first two extensive anthologies of Ukrainian drama, which include in-depth articles on Ukrainian drama and theater, on each playwright presented, and analyses of each play. These anthologies are: "The Twins Shall Meet Again: Drama of the Ukrainian Diaspora" (in Ukrainian, 1996) and "An Anthology of Modern Ukrainian Drama" (Vol. I in Ukrainian, 1988, Vol. II in English, in print).

Dr. Onyshkevych also compiled and edited seven books on Ukrainian literature, is the author of numerous entries and articles on Ukrainian literature for authologies, encyclopedias and periodicals, and has translated Ukrainian poetry and drama into English.

Dr. Onyshkevych graduated from the University of Toronto and did her graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her doctorate in Ukrainian literature. She is currently the president of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the United States.
