Woonsocket Ukrainians' exhibit displayed at Rhode Island Historical Society Museum

WOONSOCKET, R.I. - The Rhode Island Historical Society's Museum of Work and Culture on August 14 to September 16 hosted an exhibit on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. The exhibit consisted of historic images from Woonsocket and its surrounding communities. St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church and St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church have been the center of this longstanding Ukrainian community for over 60 years.

In addition to the images, the exhibit included pysanky, hand-embroidered costumes and textiles, and a section honoring the members of the military killed in action during World War II.

To mark Ukrainian Independence Day, August 24, the museum also hosted a flag-raising ceremony that day at 6 p.m. People in attendance sang the Ukrainian national anthem followed by "God Bless America." Robert L. Sherman, program specialist at the museum, thanked the three display coordinators, Alice Kogut, Eleanor Kogut and Irene Sarachmon, and welcomed a crowd of over 60 people, thanking them for attending.

As part of the program, Eleanor Kogut presented a brief summary of the history of Ukrainians in the United States and a more detailed segment about Ukrainian contributions to the state of Rhode Island.

Refreshments were served after the formal program by Mmes. Kogut and Mrs. Sarachmon.
