Why purchase UNA Christmas cards?

by Oksana Trytjak
Fraternal Activities and Special Projects Coordinator

The Ukrainian National Association has always been an active participant in the community, especially when it came to initiating projects that help promote Ukrainian culture and heritage. One of these projects has been the publication of Christmas cards.

In the early 1970s the UNA published an interesting series of Christmas cards that featured the works of renowned artists Yurij, Yarema and Edward Kozak. All the cards reflected our heritage and traditions related to the Christmas holiday season.

Since that time the UNA has promoted many other Ukrainian artists, among them: Jaroslav Adamovych, Bohdan Borzemsky, Marta Cisyk, Mykhajlo Dmytrenko, Tatianna Gajecky, Maria Harasowska-Daczyszyn, Jacques Hnizdovsky, Petro Holovatyj, Natalia Josypchuk, Oleksander Kaniuka, Andriy Khomyk, Moki Kokoris, Danylo Koshtyra, Zenowia Kulynych, Vitaliy Lytvyn, Andrij Maday, Roman Markovych, Marta Anna, Luba Maksymchuk, Leo Mol, Natalka, Lydia Palij, Aka Pereyma, Lidia Piaseckyj, Orest Poliszczuk, Myron Ryzhula, Christina Saj, Martha Savchak, Roman Smetaniuk, Jaroslav Stadnyk, Olena Stasiuk, Youlia Tkatchouk, Yurko Trytjak, Irene Twerdochlib, Halyna Tytla and Yurij Viktiuk.

The UNA appreciates the initiative and cooperation of each of these artists who willingly have shared their art with us.

It is a long-standing tradition to send greeting cards to family and friends to wish them Christmas blessings, good fortune and happiness in the New Year. We want to keep in touch with all of the special people in our live, even more so today in light of the recent events in our country and around the world. The holidays are the perfect time to reach out the old-fashioned way. Faxing and e-mailing just doesn't have the same meaning!

With this in mind, we hope to encourage you to use the UNA's Christmas cards and send them out to all your friends and relatives, be they next door, across the sea or in a distant land.

The UNA's cards are less expensive than the cards you will find in your local store, and they all have a traditional Ukrainian Christmas theme. The UNA chooses the works of contemporary artists that most describe our traditions and that reflect various genres of work. We hope that you will enjoy this year's Christmas collection.

It is difficult to select cards that please everybody. The UNA advertises each year in both our publications to encourage Ukrainian artists to submit their works for reproductions on Christmas cards. Some years the UNA receives many submissions, other years there are but a few.

The UNA asks that you remember the many reasons it has chosen to publish Christmas cards. The cards have value in terms of promoting Ukrainian artists, reflecting Ukrainian traditions and culture, celebrating the spirit of Christmas and raising funds to subsidize various UNA cultural and educational projects.

The UNA encourages you to spread the spirit of Christmas and to use the UNA's Christmas cards in all your greetings. Please remember that by supporting the UNA's projects you are supporting an organization that has been working in the community for over 107 years. Thank you for your continued support.

In the spirit of Christmas, we wish you all much love, happiness, peace and prosperity in the New Year.
