Over $24,000 raised for Burstynsky fund

TORONTO - Proceeds to the Edward N. Burstynsky Ontario Graduate Scholarship fund have reached more than $24,000 following a successful testimonial dinner last month in Toronto, according to organizers of the event.

The testimonial dinner, held on October 28 at historic Hart House on the campus of the University of Toronto, attracted more than 200 friends and colleagues of Prof. Burstynsky, who retired after a 34-year teaching career with the department of linguistics at the University of Toronto. Proceeds from the dinner amounted to $18,000 with the further $6,000 received in direct donations to the scholarship fund.

Beginning in 2002, the Burstynsky Scholarship, valued at $15,000, will be awarded to a graduate student studying linguistics at U. of T. St. Vladimir Institute and the Department of Linguistics have each made a commitment to raise a total of $50,000 toward the establishment of the scholarship, with the university matching an additional $50,000. The Province of Ontario has guaranteed an annual contribution of $10,000.

"The testimonial dinner and the establishment of the Burstynsky Scholarship are both fitting tributes to the enormous contributions Ed has made over many years to St. Vladimir Institute and to the study of linguistics in Canada. We took pride in organizing the event at Hart House, and we take pride in the fact that a scholarship has been established in Ed's honor," said Victor Krisel, president of St. Vladimir Institute.

Mr. Krisel said that contributions to the Burstynsky Scholarship Fund may still be made by contacting St. Vladimir Institute, (416) 923-3318.

The testimonial dinner featured many speakers who reflected warmly on various aspects of Prof. Burstynsky's professional career and to his dedicated volunteer activities at the institute. Speaking on behalf of the University of Toronto were: Prof. Wendy Rolph, vice-dean, academic; Prof. Emeritus Henri Schogt, Faculty of Arts and Science; and Prof. Peter Reich, Chair, department of linguistics.

Speakers from the institute included: Marianna Zaparyniuk former administrator and member of the board; and President Krisel. Several members of Prof. Burstynsky's family also paid tribute to their favorite godfather and special uncle.
