FOR THE RECORD: Cardinal Husar's Christmas message to Ukrainian nation

Below is the Christmas greeting from the head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, Lubomyr Cardinal Husar, issued in Lviv and released by the Religious Information Service of Ukraine.

Dear Ukrainian People:

On the occasion of the feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ that is now before us, we turn our hearts to events which happened over 2,000 years ago. But we do not reflect on them as on something entirely of the past, but as on a reality that endures and which we experience in the liturgy every year.

The coming of the Son of God to the human race is a reality that is always with us and with this reality are all its consequences: this light in the middle of the darkness of the sinful world; this warmth that eases the pain in our hearts; this presence of God, which proves that He loves us and looks after us. Christmas is not merely a collection of emotionally pleasing moments. It is recalling the truths of life, without which it is difficult for the person to make his way through life.

On the occasion of these annual holy days, we again want to dwell deeply upon God's contact with us, for this is the source of light and strength, of hope for a better future, a hope that could really come true.

With greetings to all on this bright holy day,

Ý Lubomyr (Husar)
Major Archbishop
Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church
