Juliana Osinchuk named woman of achievement

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Selections have been made for the BP/YWCA Women of Achievement Program for 2001. Based on excellence in their chosen field and their community involvement, one of this year's honorees is concert pianist, Juliana Osinchuk, formerly of New York City who has lived the past nine years in Anchorage.

The 12th annual awards luncheon took place on December 7, 2001, at the Egan Convention Center in Anchorage.

The YWCA of Anchorage is in its 12th year, and British Petroleum (BP) has co-sponsored the award program with the YWCA of Anchorage for all 12 years. Steve Marshall, president of BP, is corporate chair.

The objective of the Women of Achievement Program is to pay tribute to women of achievement in the community and to recognize and honor women in Anchorage who have demonstrated qualities of outstanding leadership and excellence in their profressional and personal endeavors. The awards committee considers nominations in, but not limited to, the following areas: arts, community service, education, entrepreneurship, health services, management, religion, sports and support services.

The awards criteria include a sustained excellence, accomplishment and creativity in the sphere of her chosen profession; qualities of leadership, integrity, dedication and motivation professionally and in the community; qualities of teamwork and the willingness to share her own skills and expertise in the accomplishment of goals: qualities which would encourage other women to view her as role model; and a commitment to improving the quality of life in the community through work-related or volunteer involvement.

Dr. Osinchuk is a member of Ukrainian National Association Branch 25.


Atanas Kobryn chosen local citizen of the year

NORTH PORT, Fla. - Atanas Kobryn was named Citizen of the Year during the North Port Rotary Club's annual Block Party held at Dallas White Park on Saturday, December 8, 2001, to celebrate the town's annual Christmas parade. He was chosen for the honor via a vote by citizens of the community.

The Sun Herald, a local newspaper that publishes Mr. Kobryn's columns, wrote of Mr. Kobryn: a "prominent North Port resident who is active in the affairs of his Ukrainian community, Kobryn can be found at any time of the day darting from meeting to meeting for the various organizations he either leads or is a member of, including Friends of the Library and Kiwanis."

In addition, Mr. Kobryn is past commander of Post 40 of the Ukrainian American Veterans and past national commander of that organization; past commander of an American Legion Post in New York, and a member of the local Republican Club and AmVets Post 2000.

Mr. Kobryn is also a member of the tax oversight committee, and serves on the Glenallen School Advisory Council and North Port High School Advisory Council/Shared Decision Making Team. He also writes columns for various publications and has helped raise money for the Domestic Abuse Shelter Home.

Mr. Kobryn reacted to the announcement by noting that the designation is "a great honor for me personally, my family and for our Ukrainian community here."

Mr. Kobryn is a member of Ukrainian National Association Branch 130.


Selected as province's family physician of 2001

SASKATOON - The Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians announced that Saskatoon family physician Dr. Michael Krochak has been chosen as the Saskatchewan Family Physician of the Year 2001.

Dr. Krochak received his medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan and has his family medical practice at the Pleasant Hill Medical Clinic where he's been serving the Riversdale, Saskatchewan, community since 1958. He is also on the active staff at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatchewan.

Dr. Krochak was elected as a trustee to the Saskatoon Separate School Board (1967 to 1973), is a board member of the Metropolitan Sheptytsky Society, and is the camp physician for the annual youth camp at St. Volodymyr's Eparchal Camp at Pike Lake.

Dr. John Shewchuk of the Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians Saskatchewan stated that Dr. Krochak is an excellent choice for Family Physician of the Year as his dedication to his patients, his family and his community exemplify the best qualities of a family physician.

Dr. Krochak is also an active member of Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church and a member of UNA Branch 204.
