NEW YORK - In an effort to assist the newest immigrants from Ukraine, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America applied for and received a small grant from the One City Awards Program, which supports volunteer-driven community efforts that increase education and economic opportunities, among other programs.

On February 7 the UCCA learned it has been awarded a $500 grant for conducting English language (ESL) and civic education courses, which will be held in the newly remodeled Fourth Wave Information Center located in the UCCA's headquarters in New York City. The funds awarded will be used to advertise the UCCA's program, produce educational materials and help cover copying and mailing expenses.

According to the director of neighborhood resources, the grant process this year was extremely competitive, as nearly 200 organizations submitted proposals and only 53 groups were awarded funding.

The Neighborhood Resources Department offers small grants to help neighborhood volunteers develop successful organizations and projects. Within this department, the One City Awards program provides small grants (up to $2,000), skills-building workshops and technical assistance to volunteer-driven community efforts and organizations.
