- TORONTO: The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies and the Center
for Russian and East European Studies (CREES) at the University of Toronto
will hold a "Roundtable on Ukrainian Parliamentary Elections,"
with Danylo Bilak, former advisor to the government of Ukraine and consultant,
United Nations Development Program; Taras Kuzio, research associate, CREES;
and Oleh Protsyk, University of Ottawa. The roundtable will be held in

- EDMONTON: The Ukrainian Canadian Program of the Canadian Institute
of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta is sponsoring and organizing
a conference titled "Rock and a Hard Place: Ukrainians in Canada from
the Great War to the Cold War." Papers at the conference will examine
aspects of the cultural, religious, organizational, social and economic
life of Ukrainians in Canada between the two world wars. Registration fee:

- EDMONTON: Celebrating a quarter century of academic achievement, the
Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta is
holding an anniversary banquet with guest speaker, Halvar C. Jonson, minister
of international and intergovernmental relations, Province of Alberta,
and awards presentations to the founding fathers of the CIUS - Dr. Manoly
Lupul, the first director of the CIUS, and Peter Savaryn, former chancellor
of the University of Alberta. The banquet will be held at the Faculty Club

- NEW YORK: The Ukrainian Institute of America, in cooperation with the
Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation, invites the public to a presentation
by Prof. Myroslav Marynovych, former dissident and prisoner of conscience
and currently vice-rector of the Lviv Theological Academy, who will deliver
a lecture titled "Ukraine after the Elections: Old Concerns and New
Aspirations." Prof. Marynovych was co-founder of the Ukrainian Helsinki
Group, which recently marked its 25th anniversary, and at age 28 was one
of the youngest members of the group to be arrested, incarcerated, tried
and sentenced to hard labor and exile in the Soviet gulag in the Perm region
of Russia. Upon release, Mr. Marynovych returned to his homeland and founded
Amnesty International in Ukraine. The presentation will be held at 6:30
p.m. at the Ukrainian Institute of America, 2 E. 79th St. Refreshments

Prof. Marko Pavlyshyn, Slavic department, Monash University, Australia,
titled "Surprises in Olha Kobylianska's Unpublished Letters to Osyp

a lecture by Tamara Hundorova, leading research fellow, Institute of Literature,
National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Shklar Fellow at HURI, titled
"The Melancholy of Gender: The Literary and Cultural Utopia of Olha
Kobylianska, (1863-1942)." The lecture will be held in the institute

- SILVER SPRING, Md.: St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and the
Chornobyl Committee, together with community organizations of the Washington,
metropolitan area, will commemorate the 16th anniversary of the Chornobyl
disaster on April 21. Minister Counselor of Ukraine to the United States
Volodymyr Yatsenkivskyi, Dr. Ihor Masnyk and composer Roman Hurko will
participate in the program. A video presentation of Maestro Hurko's "Panakhyda
for the Victims of Chornobyl" and bandura selections performed by
Larissa Pastukhiv will also be featured. The event will take place at 1:30
p.m. at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 15100 New Hamphsire Ave.

- WARREN, Mich.: The Detroit Metropolitan area will be given a gift of
a renovated Ukrainian Heritage Room at Wayne State University as a result
of a project undertaken by the Ukrainian Graduates of Detroit and Windsor.
In conjunction with the realization of the project, a spring fund-raising
luncheon will be held in the Ukrainian Cutural Center, 26601 Ryan Road,
at 2 p.m. The event will include a short musical program by the Soyuzianky
Singers, a silent auction, and a slide show about the project. Volodymyr
Mayorchak will present sketches of the new additions to the Heritage Room,
including a mural depicting distinghished Ukrainians as well as historical
figures and events. Tickets: $25 per person. Reservations should be made

$1,000 and more will have their names permanently displayed in the Ukrainian
Heritage Room; all donations are tax-deductible.
- RINGWOOD, N.J.: "Stride and Ride to Build" - a walk/bike-a-thon
for The Ukrainian Museum Building Fund, will be held in Ringwood State
Park. Registration: 9 a.m. The walk covers an easy three-mile course. The
mountain bike route is a challenging seven-mile ride. Bikers must be at
least 14 years old. A picnic, including Uncle Ronnie and his Barabolya
Show, will start at noon. Participants are asked to raise $150 per individual
and $250 per family. There will be terrific prizes for top fund-raisers.
Non-participants are welcome to join the picnic and entertainment. Suggested

- TORONTO: The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, Toronto Office,
is holding a lecture by Oleksander Halenko, Shklar Fellow, Harvard Ukrainian
Research Institute, Harvard University, titled "Venturing into the
Sociology of Islamic Slavery: The Case of Non-Muslim Slaves in 16th Century
Ottoman Crimea." The lecture, co-sponsored by the department of Near
and Middle Eastern civilizations and the CIUS Seminar Series, Toronto Office,
will be held at the University of Toronto, Bancroft 4, Bancroft Hall Room
