Gryshchenko attends OAS assembly

WASHINGTON - Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Observer of Ukraine to the Organization of American States (OAS) Kostyantyn Gryshchenko, took part in the 32nd OAS General Assembly regular session in Bridgetown, Barbados on June 2-4. The session was held on the ministerial level of the Western Hemisphere's Foreign Ministries. The representatives of the permanent observer countries throughout the world attended the OAS session. Ukraine has enjoyed the permanent observer status since May 1994.

In the course of the session Ambassador Gryshchenko met with Foreign Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Knowlson Gift, Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic Hugo Tolentino, Secretary General of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry Osmar Chohfi, Minister of Planning, Implementation and Public Service of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne, as well as with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Honduras Anibal Quinonez.

The parties dwelled extensively on the current state and the prospects of deepening relations with Latin American and Caribbean states both on a bilateral basis and within international forums, including the Association of Caribbean States. Special attention during the meetings was paid to intensification of Ukraine's trade and economic cooperation with the Western Hemisphere and broadening the legal base of the bilateral relations.

The session considered a wide-ranging agenda of priority topics, including poverty reduction and anti-corruption measures, as well as promotion of free trade and democracy. The Western Hemisphere's foreign ministers signed the Inter-American Convention Against Terrorism, a new comprehensive anti-terrorism treaty intended to prevent the financing of terrorism, toughen border controls and strengthen cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
