CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The first half of the year 2002 saw the publication by the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute of "Independent Belarus: Domestic Determinants, Regional Dynamics, and Implications for the West," edited by Margarita M. Balmaceda, James I. Clem, and Lisbeth L. Tarlow, and published with the support of the Smith Richardson Foundation, the volume represents the edited proceedings of a conference co-sponsored by HURI and the Davis Center for Russian Studies that sought to address the broad implications of Belarus' current political situation within the world community.

The volume includes 18 contributions from an international group of scholars, policymakers, and representatives of international organizations who gathered at Harvard University in April 1999 to discuss developments in Belarus, covering a broad spectrum of issues: domestic politics, economics, national and regional security, and relations with Russia and the West.

The volume provides a solid basis for understanding Belarus in the 1990s, its present status, and its prospects for the future.
