Ukrainian American Veterans award scholarships to college students

by Nicholas Skirka

YONKERS, N.Y. - The Ukrainian American Veterans each year awards scholarship money to college students of Ukrainian American Veteran descendants. The monetary awards are given out in the fall after the UAV national convention.

Students are required to send in an application and write an essay on a military topic. The application includes information about the essay topic. The military topic for this year was "What role or strategy should the United States take in the war on terrorism?" Students can apply anytime and the deadline usually extends to the end of August of each year.

Four students were selected as the recipients of the 2001-2002 scholarship awards in the amount of $400 each.

Samuel Paul Warycha (Yonkers, N.Y.) was awarded a scholarship in memory of Sir Harry Polche, past national Commander, for having written the best essay. He attends Fordham University in the Bronx and majors in business administration.

Lauren Rose Ferguson (Canton, Mass.) attends Massasoit Community College, in Brockton, Mass., and majors in early childhood education.

Donna Marie McDowell (Yonkers, N.Y.) attends The Culinary Institute of America, Long Island, N.Y., and majors in culinary arts.

Markian Mykola Romaniw (Ridgewood, N.J.) attends Georgetown University, Washington, and is a foreign service and international affairs major.

College students including previous winners of the scholarships, can apply and reapply each year. In the past several years, there have been over 20 scholarship winners and some $10,000 has been awarded.

The Ukrainian American Veterans expressed thanks to those who have made donations to make this project a success.
