Toronto's St. Vladimir Institute names new executive director

TORONTO - The board of directors of St. Vladimir Institute, a Ukrainian cultural center and student residence, announced the appointment of Marta Horban as its new executive director, effective March 18.

A native of Toronto with extensive roots in the local Ukrainian Canadian community, Ms. Horban brings a wealth of professional experience to her new position, said Gregory Hamara, president of the institute and chair of the board of directors.

From 1980 to 1996, Ms. Horban held teaching positions at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario; the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario; and the University of Toronto; primarily as an instructor in French language and literature, and Western literature and civilization.

After 1996 she worked in the private sector for several years in product development, marketing and human resources for a national distributor of nutritional supplements to health food retailers. Most recently she was a member of the editorial team of the Hrushevsky Translation Project.

She is fluent in English, French and Ukrainian. Her extracurricular activities have included many years of leadership with Plast and active membership with the Canadian Association of Slavists. She also gained extensive experience in fund-raising and volunteer recruitment experience with the University of Toronto Schools Parents' Association.

The position of executive director at St. Vladimir's has been vacant for more than 10 years. Ms. Horban's responsibilities with the institute will include fund-raising, marketing and communications, and human resources, as well as developing stronger ties with membership, alumni, volunteers and supporters.

"Speaking for all board members I am delighted Marta has accepted the challenge of maintaining, in her executive role, the institute's position as a leading and progressive organization in the local Ukrainian Canadian community. While her professional background is truly impressive, the selection committee and board members were particularly attracted to her infectious enthusiasm and her determination to build a stronger and more attractive organization that will deliver long-lasting benefits for our members, alumni and supporters," said Mr. Hamara.
