"Artists by Artists" show features self-portraits

NEW YORK - A show of paintings titled "Artists by Artists," referring to the process of internal self-examination inherent in self-portraiture, opens at the gallery Andrei Kushnir Michele Taylor LLC, American Painting, on Tuesday, March 1, where it will be on view through March 31.

A reception will be held at the gallery, located at 208 E. Sixth St. (between Third and Second avenues) on Thursday, March 3, at 5-8 p.m.

Self-portraits are painted regularly by nearly all serious artists. There is a drive in most artists to measure their outer-selves against their inner personas, and to trace, periodically, the tracks that time and experience leave on our physical selves.

Lifetime artists Michele Taylor, Andrei Kushnir, Barbara Nuss and Somati Mohan, all paint visions of themselves. Ms. Taylor's and Ms. Mohan's portraits stretch from youth to midlife, and reflect the physical and emotional changes in each. Ms. Nuss's self portrait is reserved and formal, keenly objective in the style of the rest of her work. Mr. Kushnir has chosen to depict himself in his winter painting gear, a funny and endearing ensemble, but bringing home the realities of a lifetime of work done in the outdoors.

Also included in the show are a few odd lots - Ms. Taylor's painting of an unaware Mr. Kushnir painting at the National Aquatic Gardens, a painting of artist Carol Spils resting on a bench in Soho in lower Manhattan by Jack Hannula, and some other works of artists in action.

Andrei Kushnir Michele/Taylor LLC gallery is located several doors down from the new Ukrainian Museum building. For additional information call (212) 254-2628.
