Public events slated for Yushchenko visit to D.C.

WASHINGTON - President Viktor Yushchenko's Welcome Committee in Washington, is in the process of finalizing plans for two major public events the committee will sponsor in honor of the new Ukrainian president while he is in the United States for his first official visit as president.

The first public event will be held at the Taras Shevchenko monument in Washington midday on Wednesday, April 6. President Yushchenko will lay a wreath at the monument to Shevchenko (1814-1861) located near Dupont Circle at P and 22nd streets.

Mr. Yushchenko will speak at a large public rally of Ukrainian Americans and friends of Ukraine who will gather beginning at noon at the Shevchenko monument to celebrate the victory of the Orange Revolution.

The second event will be a large banquet in honor of President Yushchenko to be held in the Omni Shoreham Hotel ballroom in Washington. The banquet will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6; preceeded by a reception at 6:30 p.m. Tickets to the banquet are being sold to the public ($200 per person). President Yushchenko will also speak at the banquet.

To purchase tickets, checks should be made out to the "Yushchenko Banquet Committee" and mailed (with complete contact information) to: Ukrainian Washington Credit Union, P.O. Box 19228, Alexandria, VA 22320-1228.

Financial sponsors are needed for the two events. Special sponsor tables (seating 10 people) are available for the Yushchenko banquet for $2,500 each.

The co-chairs of President Yushchenko's Welcome Committee are: Nadia Komarnyckyj McConnell, president, U.S.-Ukraine Foundation (USUF); Ihor Gawdiak, president, Ukrainian American Coordinating Council (UACC); Ihor Kotlarchuk, president, The Washington Group (TWG); Michael Sawkiw Jr., president, Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) and Iryna Kurowyckyj, president, Ukrainian National Women's League of America.

Other organizations represented on the Welcome Committee include the Ukrainian Federation of America, Ukrainian Institute of America, United Ukrainian American Relief Committee, The Bleyzer Foundation, Ukrainian Human Rights Committee, Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization, Ukrainian National Information Service, Ukrainian National Association and the Action Ukraine Coalition.
