Ukraine's first lady profiled in Harper's Bazaar magazine

PARSIPPANY, N.J. - First Lady Kateryna Yushchenko is profiled in the September issue of Harper's Bazaar, the magazine's fall fashion issue.

Mrs. Yushchenko was "profiled and dressed" by Tatiana Sorokko, who is identified as a contributor to the magazine.

Headlined "Born in the U.S.A.: The First Lady of Ukraine," the article features an introduction telling readers about Mrs. Yushchenko's Ukrainian American background and the Orange Revolution that brought her husband, Viktor Yushchenko, into office.

"Mr. Yushchenko's political and personal struggles have raised the profile of Ukraine in all venues, even fashion: This season, Jean Paul Gaultier announced that his couture line was inspired by Ukraine, and Mrs. Yushchenko was a guest of honor at his show. Indisputably, at 44, Kateryna Yushchenko is hitting her stride and helping her husband rewrite history," Ms. Sorokko writes.

An interview with Mrs. Yushchenko follows. It covers such topics as the poisoning of her husband, her move to Ukraine, the differences between Ukrainians and Americans, her feelings about American traditions, how she raises her children, what a typical day is like for the first lady of Ukraine and, how she prepares "beauty- and fashion-wise" for state events.

The concluding question asks Mrs. Yushchenko what she thinks her husband's legacy will be. Her answer: "That he taught the people that they could stand up for their rights, which they did, and to have hope for their future. You could say it took 1,000 years for this to happen."

Mrs. Yushchenko appears in photos taken at the family's country home outside Kyiv; in the lead photo she is seen wearing a Calvin Klein blouse ($340) and a flowing long skirt by Carolina Herrera ($4,290). She is also seen in photos with her daughters, with Mr. Gaultier, and next to her husband with President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.
